Such a big girl
(by JPC)
It happened so fast - one day Ellie was our little baby and now she is a toddler. And I do mean full fledged, emboldened toddler, complete with "no", selective hearing, temper tantrums, etc. I miss her little baby smell self with the cuddles and sighs. But how I love her new confidence, communication, and development of who she is and will be! Although I am sad that she no longer wants to be held most of the time, I am thrilled that she wants to explore the world. I feel so lucky to be a part of the growth of this amazing little being!

Friday the 20th
(by JPC)
We haven't posted anything for a while because we have been too busy enjoying the amazing spring/summer weather we are having! Ellie is thrilled about all the time she can be out swinging.
Last night though we went out for my previously mentioned birthday :-) It was the first time that we left Ellie with a real babysitter (meaning not my parents!) so it was a big event for us. We had planned to go to a movie and then dinner. Ellie was fine when we left and didn't shed a tear as we walked out the door (YAY!). All was going well as we watched the commercials and previews before the movie, but then 5 minutes into the movie the fire alarm went off. They evacuated the entire movie theater. The police, ambulance, and fire trucks came. After about 20 minutes of waiting, we eventually gave up on the idea of a movie and figured that we would just come back the next day to get tickets for another day. So our next plan was to have dinner - we drove up to the restaurant and there was a huge crowd out front. After unsuccessfully waiting to get back into the movie, we decided that we did not want to wait for dinner too!
Then we had an Aha! moment, as Oprah says. "Let's go order our new couch while we're in the area, that won't take long!" Well, you can guess based on the luck we had the rest of the night - we spent 40 minutes ordering our new couch. Lori was thrilled to lie on the bed next to the saleswomen's desk. She saw this as a great opportunity to get some sleep. Unfortunately, I made her get up when people started walking by looking at her wondering if she were alive or dead. We then we went back to the movie theater to get ticket vouchers for our interrupted movie, which we had to fight for.
One more swing past the original restaurant where we confirmed the hour+ waiting time. It had been a long night and we were hungry so we turned to our local standard. We had a delicious dinner, but since we eat or order from there a few times a month, we were hoping for something different for the birthday celebration.
So, in summary, we spent $80 to see 10 minutes of a movie, order our new couch, and have dinner someplace we eat all the time. More importantly though we got to do it together and got several laughs out of it, after the fact. And we learned that Ellie is fine with a babysitter, which is probably worth the money :-)

Flooding
(by JPC)
Today we had an unexpected day off of work! The nor'easter that hit our area dumped quite a bit of water that the drainage systems were not able to handle. Our home is fine and things in our local area have cleared up. Unfortunately, though, the city that we work in is flooded in many areas, rendering most of the roads leading in and out unusable. Yesterday, it took us 2 hours to get to work (less than 10 miles from home). After work, our route to pick up Ellie was closed so we had quite the adventure just getting her and were thankful to make it home safely. Today our office was closed for safety reasons so we spent the day together. We went shopping (we think we may have found our new couch!) and bowling (a new favorite thanks to Aunt Barbie!). It was a nice surprise to have an extra day during the week to just relax and enjoy our family.
Unfortunately, we know that for many people, today was not an enjoyable day. Our thoughts are certainly with those who have lost loved ones in yesterday's tragic events at Virginia Tech. It is another reminder to me that these days with loved ones are precious and should be treasured.

Laughter

Some laughter for those who could use a little of their own! Before playing the video, please go to the bottom of this page and turn the music off.
(by LPC) Actually, the music enhances the video! ;-)

Easter
(by JPC)
This year we celebrated Easter on Saturday so that we could share it with Aunt Barbie and Kyleigh before they returned home. Jana's parents came down for dinner and we enjoyed opening our Easter baskets and an egg hunt. The Easter bunny and his associates were quite generous to the girls!

A cold day at the beach
(by JPC)
Today we went spent a few hours at the beach where we celebrated the opening of the boardwalk for the season (2 for 1 ride tickets!). We were amazed as we saw our little baby grow into a toddler right before our eyes. We thought that Ellie would be too scared to ride any of the kiddie rides, after all we weren't able to get a picture with Santa or the Easter Bunny this year. To our amazement, however, she loved it! Her first ride was with Kyleigh (video below), which eased her in to the idea and after that she went on 4 more alone. I guess it's not the baby who's scared, but the mamas who are scared to let her grow up. We certainly want her to have an adventerous spirit, but I think that we (mainly me) need to develop our own first so that we're prepared for these "big" developments. Overall, we had an excellent albeit cold afternoon at the beach!

Why would you think that I'd be scared of this baby ride?!?

Trip to NYC
(by JPC)
We have had such a great visit with Ellie's aunt and cousin this week. We had planned to make an overnight trip yesterday, but unfortunately Ellie was sick so we were unable to go. Instead some of us went to the movies and shopping yesterday. Today we all went to New York to check out Chinatown and Little Italy. We had some good food and some of us found some amazing bargains (ask Barb for details!). The weather has been nice this week and we've been enjoying spending time at the playground every day as well. Here are a few shots of us in NYC today....
